Frequently Asked Questions

  • One question we are frequently asked is: How much does it cost if you help me with something?
  • Answer: The help given by volunteers of Wivenhoe Helping Hands does not need to be paid for. It is a free service. If you feel that you want to make a donation towards the work of Helping Hands then please feel free to do so- the amount is entirely up to you.

  • Sometimes, young people contact us asking if work experience is available.
  • Answer: No, we cannot provide work experience placements.

  • As a volunteer, how often will I be asked to help?
  • Answer: When it is convenient to you. Maybe you are only available one day a week. That’s fine with us and you can always say no to any job that you are asked to do. We try not to ask a volunteer more than once a week.

  • I can’t drive, can I still help?
  • Answer: Yes, we know of housebound residents who would love a chat.

  • If I use my car, can I have help towards the cost?
  • Answer: Yes, all volunteers are reimbursed for fuel expenses.

  • How about my car insurance- will I be covered if I use it on WHH business?
  • Answer: Almost every insurance company covers drivers for doing this type of voluntary work without charging an extra premium. Volunteers must contact their insurer and tell them that the car will be used for occasional voluntary work. We are not aware that an appropriate policy endorsement has ever been refused.
